About

Katrina J. Daroff

There is no faster route to an existential crisis than asking me to do an "about me" page. "Oh no! Who am I?" Because, how can we ever distill the lifetimes of experiences that make us who we are into a few short paragraphs?

I'll do my best.

We'll skip over a childhood full of fairytales and playing outside without the help of the internet to fill bored afternoons, that served as much of the inspiration for the internal landscape where my stories live and go straight to my writer life.

I don't know when I decided I wanted to be a writer, like so many story tellers, I think it is just what I always was, but that was what I knew I wanted to be when I stepped out of my parent's jeep in front of my dorm at Whitworth University back in 2008. That desire never dimmed over the four years I spent there studying Creative Nonfiction, or the ten years after that I spent writing the Light and Shadow Series. Though the route to becoming what I saw as a "Writer" took a great many twists and turns. Paths that looked like detours; working as a paraeducator, running a ministry, stubbornly insisting on traveling the world, all became mental compost for my stories. Something meant to be poured over an idea to help it grow.
And my mental compost certainly helped my ideas grow.

I've self published three little nonfiction books since graduating in 2012 but my primary focus was the Light and Shadow Series, an epic fantasy following a group of characters who live very close to my heart. My very own version of the fairytales I grew up reading and watching on tv.

Now, as the Light and Shadow series is releasing, I am also working on a Masters of Fine Arts, with the goal of not just becoming a better writer but of helping others become the writers they want to be.
